2020/6/26

1st Installment: Big Egg Mountain (Suur Munamägi)

Together with Prof. Asser at the top of Suur Munamägi
From 20th to 21st of June, Ambassador KITAOKA made his 7th visit to the City of Tartu, invited by Prof. Toomas Asser, the honorable rector of the University of Tartu, and his wife Karin-san.

Prof. Asser had the experience of staying in Japan, conducting research works in Tohoku University from 1988 to 1989.
The purpose of the Ambassador’s visit this time is to learn “Southern Estonia (Lõuna-Eesti)”, which is the birthplace for Prof. Asser and his wife, with their guidance. On the 1st day, Ambassador enjoyed walking around the City of Tartu together with dinner at the Prof. Asser’s house.

On the 2nd day, Ambassador spent the whole day travelling around “Lõuna-Eesti”, and climbed up to the top of “Big Egg Mountain (Suur Munamägi)”, which is the place the Ambassador wanted to visit most since his arrival in Estonia in October last year. It is as high as 317 meters, the highest point not only in Estonia but also all over the three Baltic countries! The Ambassador, without using lift, climbed up to the top of the observatory, and was so much impressed by the breathtaking beauty of “Lõuna-Eesti”, celebrated by such a fair weather.

2nd Installment: Cherry Trees planted in the City of Otepää

Cherry trees in front of Otepää rural municipality building
From 20th to 21st of June, Ambassador KITAOKA made his study tour in “Southern Estonia (Lõuna-Eesti)” invited by Prof. Toomas Asser, the honorable rector of the University of Tartu, and his wife Karin-san.

On 21st, Ambassador visited the City of Otepää, which was already referred to in our Facebook (June 9 at 4:07 PM)for the plantation of two cherry trees in front of their Rural Municipality Building. Cherry trees have a special importance in Japan, regarded as a national symbol.

Ambassador wholeheartedly wished that those cherry trees could survive severe winter and bloom in spring beautifully. The City of Otepää is regarded as “Winter Capital” in Estonia, and is so famous as a ski resort. Ambassador also wished that the City of Otepää could make a sister city agreement with a Japanese ski resort.

3rd Installment: Mr. Saar cooked Estonian materials exquisitely!

Together with the Chef of Tammuri talu
From 20th to 21st of June, Ambassador KITAOKA made his study tour in “Southern Estonia (Lõuna-Eesti)” invited by Prof. Toomas Asser, the honorable rector of the University of Tartu, and his wife Karin-san.

On 21st, Ambassador, who became so hungry, was cordially welcomed by Mr. Erki Saar, the chef of the restaurant “Tammuri talu (Oak farm)”.

His lunch, which was cooked by using fresh Estonian materials, and was enjoyed by the President once, thoroughly charmed Ambassador, together with the interior and exterior of the restaurant, wearing the 19th century farm’s rich atmosphere!
