Youth from Saku, Japan, and Saku, Estonia, Pay Courtesy Call to the Embassy

2026/8/7
On August 7, eight junior high school students from Saku City, Nagano Prefecture, who are visiting Estonia as part of exchanges between Saku City and Saku Municipality in Estonia, paid a courtesy call to Counsellor MIYATA Kenji, together with eight students from the Estonian side.

The exchanges between the two cities began in 1998 when an official at the Embassy of Estonia in Japan learned of the existence of Saku City in Japan, which shares the same name as Saku Municipality. They concluded a sister city agreement in 2019. The two cities have maintained active exchanges, with children visiting each other—from Saku City in the summer and from Saku Municipality in the autumn.

The Embassy remains committed to supporting the further deepening of such local government exchanges, which serve as the foundation of the friendly relations between Japan and Estonia.
