2025/7/11
On July 11, Embassy of Japan in Estonia held the Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) reception to commemorate the 71st anniversary at the Ambassador's residence. This was the first JSDF Day reception since the establishment of the post of the Japanese Defense Attaché in Estonia. The reception was attended by many distinguished guests, including the First Vice-Chairman of the Parliament (Riiikogu), Mr. Toomas Kivimägi, the Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Defence, Mr. Kaimo Kuusk, Chief of Staff of the Joint Headquarters of Estonian Defence Forces, Major General, Mr. Vahur Karus, and representatives from the Estonian Government, Estonia-Japan parliamentary friendship group, NATO, diplomatic corps and Defence attachés.
In his opening speech, Ambassador NAKAMURA Koichiro emphasised the contribution of JSDF to the international community and spoke of the importance of bilateral and multilateral cooperation based on the principle of “Proactive Contribution to Peace” in the current challenging international security situation. He also stressed that since Russia started its aggression against Ukraine in 2022, defence cooperation between Estonia and Japan, as well as between NATO and Indo-Pacific like-minded countries, is becoming more and more important, based on the deepening consensus that the security of Euro-Atlantic and the Indo-Pacific is inseparable.
The reception featured traditional Japanese cuisine prepared by the Ambassador’s chef and Japanese drinks including sake, shochu, plum wine, beer and whisky. Exhibits from Mitsubishi Electric Corporation and Tokyo Keiki Inc. further promoted understanding of Japanese defense equipment and technology.
