●タリンでクルーズ船の埠頭がオープン
Port of Tallinn opened a new quay for tourists. The quay cost € 9.3 million. It is expected that about 300 cruise ships with 470,000 tourists will visit Estonia this year.

●食料価格,10年間40%上昇
Price increase in Estonia continues. Since Estonia joined the EU and the Eurozone, prices have also increased significantly. According to the Estonian Institute of Economic Research, the food basket price has increased more than 40 per cent in the past decade. Especially high increase of food prices, or 15 per cent, occurred after joining the Eurozone. Also real estate prices have went up remarkably. Finance Minister Jürgen Ligi (RP) said that prices have increased less than people believe because purchasing power has also increased in average by 40 per cent. Economist Maris Lauri says that prices are expected to increase even further in the second half of the year.

●内務相,外国人向電子ID案賞賛
E-residency may be Estonia’s “Nokia”. Interior Minister Hanno Pevkur said at the Varul lawyer firm’s 20th anniversary that the e-ID or virtual identification for non-residents may be the idea that Estonia has been looking for. Pevkur referred to the fact that companies with foreign ownership influenced 60 per cent of Estonian export and gave 45 per cent of additional value to Estonian economy. Former Prime Minister, MP Andrus Ansip noted that he is glad that Estonian economy grows quicker than the global economy does.

Finnish metal industry moves its production from Hungary to Estonia. Mecanova will open a factory in Pärnu that will employ 30 people due to better logistical and legal conditions.

SEB bank: every third new company is founded by a woman. In the last three years about 20,000 companies have been founded per year in Estonia and every third founder has been a woman. Among the founders of starting companies, 43 per cent were aged 26-35 and half had higher education or were in the middle of obtaining it.

●タルトゥ大学,移植医療センターを開設
Tartu University opens a Centre of Excellence for Translational Medicine today. It is a step towards multidisciplinary translational approach and it will link two major research fields, neuroscience and immunology. The building has the most modern scientific equipment, e.g. DNA segmentators. Also it includes the biggest autoclave in the Baltics. Its animal testing centre accommodates 25,000 mice and 7000 rats.

Estonia is among 30 most competitive countries. Estonia is 30th in the annual index of the most competitive economies, up six spots in the IMD World Competitiveness Centre’s ranking system. The index ranked 60 economies around the world. The USA was first in the index.

Estonian state will create a mobile application of its state portal called ’eesti.ee’. The website is a gateway to eEstonia services.

●第1四半期平均賃金:前年同期比+7.3%
Average salary increased quickly. According to Statistics Estonia, in the 1st quarter of 2014, the average monthly gross wages and salaries were € 966 and the average hourly gross wages and salaries were € 6.02. Compared to the 1st quarter of 2013, the average monthly gross wages and salaries increased 7.3 per cent and the average hourly gross wages and salaries increased 6.9 per cent.

The biggest Estonian telecom service exporter aims at 5 million clients. Top Connect hopes to have 5 million users for its international calling card by the end of this year. Currently the company already has 3.8 million clients.

Nõo Lihatööstus 社(食肉),新工場開設
The biggest Estonian meat industry with local capital opened a new production unit. The 2000 m2 production building of Nõo Lihatööstus cost € 2.5 million. Company exports about 30 per cent of its products.

Average gross wage in the I quarter in Estonia was € 966. The relevant figure in Latvia was € 724 and in Lithuania € 691.

エストニア,格付A+維持
Fitch rating agency confirmed Estonian rating at its current A+ level with a stable outlook. Fitch said that Estonia’s strength is its good state’s financial situation and its low debt burden. The rating agency expects the economic growth to be 1.7 per cent in 2014 and 3.1 per cent in 2015.

●輸出企業各社,昨年業績
One of the biggest exporters in Estonia increased their turnovers in 2013, but do not expect growth in 2014. The sixth biggest exporter in Estonia, power and automation firm ABB, earned € 9.5 million in net profit in 2013, which was 7.1 per cent less than the year before due to major investments and smaller demand for wind generators. The fourth biggest exporter, PKC Eesti, that produces wires and cables had a € 10 million increase in turnover with total € 144 million turnover last year. Its net profit fell annually by 7.3 per cent to € 17.7 million. It was mainly linked to higher energy and salary costs.

Entrepreneurship total profit went up. Despite shrinking economy in the I quarter, total profit of firms increased thanks to bigger efficiency and higher internal consumption. According to Statistics Estonia, the total profit of the business sector was € 705 million, i.e. annually 10 per cent increase. Total profit increased in almost all economic activities with the biggest contribution to the growth made by information and communication, agriculture and professional, scientific and technical activities. Statoil Fuel & Retail Eesti Chief Director Kai Realo said the main reason for growth was optimistic internal consumption thanks to increased salaries. However, lack of labour force remains a challenge for companies.
